Since starting school, Booker has gotten pretty good with his sight words. This video is rather dull but it gives you a good idea of what our afternoons look like: Booker being goofy, Ike sticking his hands down his pants and Asher laughing at it all.

Also, I'm looking for book suggestions for Booker. So far we've read The Phantom Tollbooth, The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Peter Pan, Matilda, The Twenty-One Balloons, The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Stuart Little. Of those books, he really enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Matilda and The BFG were a little above his level. What are your favorite books for a 5-6 year old?

Six Months!

Asher,

Today is your six month birthday! Time has flown by. Please, please, please stop growing up. The older you get, the less plausible my baby weight excuse grows. Plus, I miss your sweet newborn ear lobe fuzz.

Here's what we know about you so far...

Eyes: blue. Hair: bald. Eyebrows: none. Teeth: two bottom ones. Diaper size: size 3. You take 3 naps a day, each nap lasts 1 to 2 hours long. I'm glad you sleep so much but it sure makes running errands hard. You go to bed around 6:30, wake up around 6:30. You sit up, you roll over, you shift and scooch around on your belly. I definitely can't leave you unattended on the bed anymore.

You're no longer nursing (as of a few days ago). I'm sad about that. But now that you're on formula, you're FINALLY sleeping through the night. So not too sad. You hold your own bottle. You've tried rice cereal, bananas and butternut squash with corn. The other day, your dad fed you three peas at dinnertime. The following morning, I found three peas in your diaper.

You have a dimple on your left cheek. Your umbilical hernia healed and your belly button looks normal! You have your dad's feet and his coloring too. When I pick you up, you feel so heavy and solid.

This is what your tired face looks like...

You no longer like your pacifier, which is a little annoying but at least we don't have to worry about weaning you from it. To put you to sleep, I lay you down, put on your white noise machine, you cry for a few minutes and then fall asleep. You like the sounds of the ocean.

You drool all the time. Can you see the two little crooked teeth in the photo below? You have never been sick. I'm so grateful for this.

You've reached the stage where you need more entertainment than you did previously. Usually a toy or two (to chew on) will suffice but sometimes you'd rather sit near your two brothers and laugh at their antics.

Asher, you are so sweet and I love you dearly.

Nervous Habit

Booker has several nervous habits, but just one drives me absolutely insane. He chews on his shirt collar. Not only does it look and smell awful, it's also creating holes in his shirts. Which is totally unacceptable because two more kids have to wear those shirts!

I've been looking for some sort of solution. For awhile I was putting his shirt on time out if I caught him chewing on it, but eventually he would get cold and go grab another shirt. Then I came up with this brilliant solution...

Asher's bib. Which is great because not only does it prevent him from chewing on his collar, it's also embarrassing for him. Now I don't know what to do with him while he's at school. I'm ready to start duct-taping his shirts up each morning before he leaves. Suggestions?

Ike's fro needed some taming. I wasn't ready to cut off all his curls, so this was just a trim. I always thought Ike got his curls from the Proffitt side but as I look at these pictures, his hair reminds me an awful lot of his Uncle Chris. Booker was looking pretty shaggy himself. He liked his cut so much, he dubbed it the "shark fin" and promised that he wouldn't give us grief when we try to style his hair on Sundays. Asher obviously didn't get a haircut. Big ole' baldy head.

This morning Booker's Joy School class went caroling at our local Senior Center. I'm so glad my kids didn't inherit my fear of being in front of a crowd. I guess I have Clark's genes to thank for that. Booker's been pretty excited about "singing for the Grandmas and Grandpas." Last night, we were trying to teach a Temple Prep class downstairs while Booker was upstairs in bed belting out Jingle Bells as loud as humanly possible for a good 15 minutes. It was hilarious... and very distracting to the two young men sitting in our living room.

Booker Turns Four!

Booker had his 4th birthday yesterday and we decided to celebrate with family this year. We invited his cousins from Mesa to come over for a pool party. Booker was eagerly anticipating his party the entire week before- "How many more days until my cousins come to my house?" He had such a blast. Thanks to everyone who came!

We've never had so many people in our pool at once- it was awesome! Here the older cousins are making a whirlpool.

We let him open presents on Sunday even though it was the day before his birthday, that way Clark could be around to play many a round of Dora Candyland with us. A friend of mine suggested that he might like the Legos Star Wars Wii game. Holy cow, he's obsessed. He'll do just about any chore I require of him to play more Legos Star Wars. He also loves his new Storm Trooper costume. He's been sleeping in it at night. Two nights ago, Booker came wandering into our room at 4 o'clock in the morning fully decked out in his costume. He whispers, "Know what, dad? Storm troopers can see in the dark." It's true they can, but unfortunately the ability to see in the dark doesn't help when you need to go pee. Thankfully he went back to bed.

Every other Saturday at 10 am, Lowe's has a clinic where kids can build little projects. The best part? It's totally free. They even give you a Lowe's apron and safetly goggles to keep. When you complete your project you get a certificate and a patch for your apron. A few weeks ago, the boys made monster trucks. Last Saturday, they made U.F.O.'s complete with blinking lights on top.

After the Carnival, we headed over to the nearby Rillito River because it actually had water in it. We've had a lot of rain this winter, so the river isn't bone dry like it usually is. We met up with our friends, the Bennetts and let the kids go wild. Before getting wet, Booker and Ren had fun collecting animal bones. They found the skeleton of some mid-sized critter- maybe a bobcat? When we got back home, they actually fought over who got to keep what. Booker ended up with the jawbone and Ren took home the femur. Lucky for me, Ren's mom is still talking to me. That's when you know you've got a good friend!

This is definitely a picture overload but I just couldn't resist- these guys are just too cute together. This is Booker and his best bud, Ren. If you happen to be an older kid who has Star Wars/Indiana Jones/Lego knowledge, then Booker will follow you around like a puppy dog. Ren fits all of the above, plus he's super sweet and patient with Booker.

I can guarantee that Booker wouldn't have gone on a single ride at the Carnival yesterday if it hadn't been for Ren. These boys had a blast together. Ike, as usual, was pretty nonplussed, although he did show a tiny bit of excitement on the swings.

One of Booker's all time favorite pastimes is visiting his cousins in Mesa. He adores them, all 30+ of them. He will happily endure an hour and a half in the car if it means he gets to play with his cousins. So when he heard that the Evans girls were coming to Tucson for the day, he went nuts. He didn't care that he was totally outnumbered by girls, he had a blast. Thanks for stopping by to see us!

A Night in Prescott

Earlier this week, we headed up to Prescott for a night to see my sister. We spent a beautiful, brisk afternoon at the lake, feeding ducks, trying to start a fire and eating smores. The boys had a blast. Although, whenever we travel it's pretty much a guarantee that one or both of them will vomit at some point. I guess it was Ike's turn this trip. He barfed all over me right as we were leaving to have dinner with my sister and her friends. I had to wear my pajamas to the restaurant because I didn't have a change of clothes.

Kids. They have plans and those plans are usually the opposite of yours.

Pretty much every single day Booker does something to make me laugh. I'd like to be better at recording these funny moments... so here goes.

While my mom was visiting last week, Booker asked her why she had a "big, fat belly." She explained that when you get older, sometimes you get a big, fat belly. Upon seeing my pregnant sister a few days ago, Booker explained, "Rie-rie, you must be older because you have a big, fat belly."

Which leads to an explanation of babies and how they grow in tummies. Later on, Booker told me that he wanted a baby sister...

M: But Booker, what if we have a baby brother and not a sister?

B: Like two Ike's?

M: Yes, like two Ike's.

B: No, I want a baby sister.

This morning, he wanted some help putting on his socks...

B: Mom, which sock goes on this foot?

M: It doesn't matter. You can put whatever sock on whatever foot. Shoes, on the other hand, are special. You see, each foot is special and needs a particular shoe. Socks don't matter.

B: Mom, both my feet are special.

M: Yes, yes they are.

Booker is no longer my little boy. He's not interested in Diego, Dora or Backyardigans like he used to be. Instead, he's obsessed with Star Wars and Indiana Jones (hasn't seen any of the movies, but has picked up enough to know the main characters.) All day long, he walks around assigning characters...

B: Mom, you're Princess Leia. I'm Luke Skywalker and Ike is Little Luke Skywalker.

M: Ok.

B: And Fergus is Chewy.

M: Ok.

B: No actually, Mom, I'm Darth Vader and Ike is little Darth Vader. My light saber is red. Luke's is blue. You don't have a light saber... you have a gun.

Booker- age 3

Booker loves being independent. He insists on getting himself dressed each morning and picking out his own clothes. Sometimes he doubles up on his underwear on accident. His cousin Trigg gave him a pair of cowboy boots and he ADORES them- wears them everywhere. You can hear him coming from a mile away when his wears his boots.

Did I mention he loves being independent? He doesn't like getting help for anything. On several occasions, he's dropped his pants wherever we are so he can go pee-pee by himself (which is fine when we're at the park, not so fine when we're at the grocery store- I have to watch him closely.) He doesn't like using the women's bathroom and insists on going into the men's bathroom by himself.

Booker also loves being helpful. His favorite chore is using the pooper scooper to pick up dog poop. When I'm not looking he'll grab the pooper scooper and head outside. Normally, I wouldn't mind him doing this but it means I have to stop whatever I'm doing to hold the plastic bag for him. He also loves scrubbing and/or skimming the pool.

Booker loves computer games at www.nickjr.com almost as much as he loves scooping poop. He's figured out to open and close windows and operate the mouse. Scary. I can get him to do just about anything if I bribe him with computer games.

Booker loves living in a neighborhood full of kids. He keeps asking to ride the school bus and go to school. He loves living by his best friend, Rachel although he's a homebody and prefers to have Rachel come and play at his house instead of hers. He also loves it when Kennedy shows up to play with/watch him.

Booker went to his first week of Sunbeams. He didn't hesitate or cry when he walked into the Primary room which was a relief. Instead he told me that big kids go to Primary and that he's now a big kid. When I asked him what he learned he told me, "nuffin" which has always been his reply when I ask. I know he's learning something though because he knows the words to "I Am a Child of God" and reminds me that "Jesus likes it when he is nice to his brother." He also got a CTR ring from his teacher but refuses to wear it. Instead he likes to put it in his pocket to keep it safe.

Ike- age 16 months

Teichert is quickly growing up and gaining more personality each day. He's recently formed an attachment with his blankie and now we have to bring it everywhere we go. He loves eating prunes and getting them all over his face (see above). His true love, though is CANDY. Lots and lots of candy. This kid goes crazy for candy and races for the registers as soon as we enter a grocery store. His first two word string was "bwee share" (please share)- a plea for Booker to share his candy with him. Other words that Ike can say- daddy, hi, bye, shoe, bath, doggie, ball, go, catch, sit and night-night. Still no mommy though.

Ike is down to one nap a day, usually from the mid morning to 1 or 2 in the afternoon. He goes back in his crib in the late afternoon for some quiet time. Honestly, I think he gets sick of me and Booker and enjoys the alone time with his blankie. He is a breeze to put down for naps and bedtime. He just needs his blankie and sippy cup full of milk. No rocking, singing or cuddling for this boy.

Ike is a nightmare at church. We're counting down the days until nursery. He's not the type of kid to sit still in your lap, he's all over the place- probably looking for more candy.

Overall, I'm surprised with how different he is from his brother. He can be a clingy kid and doesn't like it when I leave him with someone else. But if you give him your undivided attention, he's full of love and sweetness. And if you give him candy, he's your best friend for life. Just don't try and take away his blankie. That is Booker's favorite new way to torture him.

When Booker isn't torturing him, Ike loves to follow him around like a puppy dog. If Booker is naked then Ike starts tugging on his clothes to get them off. When Booker builds a fort and runs around like a madman, Ike is two steps behind him- until he gets knocked over and comes running to me crying. A few kisses and he's back in the saddle. I have a feeling these two are going to be good buddies.

Can you believe we had never been to Thanksgiving Point before? We went to the animal farm and then met up with the lovely Wernli ladies for the Dinosaur Museum. Booker and Lexi built this dinosaur and he had about 15 legs.

Ward Halloween Party

After our trip to Mesa, we headed back to Tucson and trick-or-treated our neighborhood. Booker had a pretty good haul at this point but we still decided to check out the ward Halloween party and hit up the trunk-or-treating (I noticed a lack of Reeses peanut butter cups in his bucket.) Teichert must have been motivated by the cake walk because he was up and walking all over the place. I seem to remember something similar happening two years ago.

Motorcycle Fun

Yesterday, we went up to Mesa for a Halloween party with the Proffitts. Booker and Ike always have a blast up at Grunyon Run (think trampoline, slides, swings, and bikes galore.) They both fell in love with this motorcycle. At one point, Ike climbed on and set his knee on the pedal. He went around and around in circles for quite some time before he shifted off.

Booker was actually the one who begged for mercy on Teichert's behalf. Instead of throwing him out in the dumpster, he suggested we just give Ike a bath with lots of bubbles. How nice (and out of character) of him.
